Michael Sledjeski organized the Del Rio Songwriting Contest, which featured songs about his adopted home near the Smoky Mountains. He was inspired by the competition to add lyrics to some of his favorites, and to write some new songs as well.
“Del Rio, With Your Misty Mountains High”, a finalist in the Lyrics-only category was originally written by Doloris Dalton.
She was born in Del Rio and grew up singing with her family. She plays bluegrass bass and manages the Music Barn in Newport Tennessee. Michael modified the lyrics a bit, then added an introduction and a bridge to the song.
Other than his recent efforts, Michael has written a few blues numbers, and some poetry along the way. His current writing is influenced by the music of Bob Dylan, Jimmie Rodgers and the music and language of East Tennessee.
As a guitarist, Michael rates himself “advanced beginner” at slide guitar and finger-picking. His entire stage career consists of one recent performance at the Music Barn in Newport, Tennessee. He says, “I’m pretty much a beginner at songwriting, and I’m proud to be a finalist at the 2014 SMSWF.”
