JIMBO WHALEY AND THE GREENRBIER IN CONCERT

TO BENEFIT THE LUCINDA OAKLEY OGLE LOG CABIN RESTORATION

The Gatlinburg Garden Club’s Lucinda Oakley Ogle Log Cabin Restoration fund to benefit from the Jimbo Whaley and The Greenbrier In Concert at the Mills Auditorium Sat. night 6-8 PM  Aug. 25, 2012 during the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival.  Tickets are $20 each sales tax included.   You can purchase these tickets on line at smswf.com or call 865- for tickets.  The Garden Club receives a portion of the ticket sales from this concert.

“There could not be a better event than the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival to help raise money and attention to the Lucinda Oakley Ogle Log Cabin Restoration fund,” noted Mary Fairbanks, President of the Gatlinburg Garden Club. “Lucinda’s dad, Wiley Oakley, known as the  first ambassador of this area and sometimes called the “Will Rogers of The Smokies gave President Roosevelt the vision to have a free National Park called the Great Smoky Mountains,” Fairbanks observed.

Lucinda Oakley Ogle and her daddy Wiley Oakley are part of our heritage here in the Smoky Mountains.  They were one of the families who had to leave their home when the Smoky Mountains National Park was established.  Lucinda Oakley Ogle was one of the founders of the Gatlinburg Garden Club established in 1937.  The gardens that surrounded Lucinda’s home were filled with native flowers, shrubs and trees, many of which were identified with hand painted signs.

“We are so fortunate in this community to have Jimbo Whaley and The Greenbrier”,  reflected Jan Lapides, a member of the Gatlinburg Garden Club, who was instrumental in getting Jimbo Whaley to write a song about the Lucinda Oakley Ogle Log Cabin.   “This song will first be heard on the Aug. 25th Mills Auditorium Stage during the 6-8 pm venue slot during the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival”,Jan Lapides announced.    It is most appropriate that Jimbo  Whaley would write a song about Lucinda as he previously wrote a song about Jack Huff carrying his mother to the top of Mount LeConte.   Jimbo Whaley and The Greenbrier portray well our musical heritage here in the Smoky Mountains.

Rebuilding the cabin is a project of the Gatlinburg Garden Club, the City of Gatlinburg and the Gatlinburg Gateway Foundation to preserve the area's history. Lucinda Ogle was one of the founders of the garden club and had preserved and propagated wildflowers around her home. Thus far, the log cabin has been dismantled, logs numbered, cataloged and stored in preparation of its reconstruction.

The partnership between the City, Gateway Foundation and the Gatlinburg Garden Club has raised some money already to rebuild the cabin.   Funds raised through the Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival; is but another component in this process. Once enough money is secured the cabin will be restored, eventually transforming it into a museum.  Plans are to include artifacts, photographs and interpretive displays about the people who lived here. It will also tell the story of the women in the area and show how they were able to earn a living by selling their crafts.  A self guided tour of Lucinda's former home will provide a free educational experience that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Eventually, there will be an opportunity at the cabin to have modern day traditional craft demonstrations and storytelling.

The Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival Aug. 23-25, 2012 is a Special Event in downtown Gatlinburg “Celebrating Our Appalachian Musical Roots” hosted by Mountain Rentals of Gatlinburg, Ole Smoky Moonshine and Ober Gatlinburg among others such as BOSE , ASCAP, NSAI, Tennessee State Bank, Park Vista, Sidney James, Reagan Resorts and many others. FIRST ROUND
SMSWF 2012 SONGWRITER CONTEST JUDGING

“What I have learned yesterday in the world of songwriting is; there is a lot of talented people out there”, noted Cyndy Reeves, Founder SMSWF.  “Having said that however, the most important thing I learned is every songwriter out  there needs to be involve him/herself into some of the education programs offered in the art of songwriting!” she observed.    Structure, verses, chords, hooks, lines, melodies, cadences, rhyme etc.  How do you write a classic? GET RID OF YOUR EGO and focus on learning how to perfect your songs.

“I saw this while I watched the judging that went on during the preliminary round of judging the SMSWF 2012 Songwriters Contest,” Reeves explained.  Just because you did not get scored nor won the category does not mean that you are not worthy and do not have a chance.  There were many songs that had great points and potential for becoming a hit and or being  a great songwriter that did not make the cuts.  If you do not get to be in the Contest Finale, please still attend the SMSWF and network with a lot of great people that can help each of your careers.  There was one song that a couple of the judges had either seen or heard before and both of them said that song would go somewhere one day as they have always liked it.  Strangely enough after much discussion it did not happen in this contest.  Points about other songs in the category along with this particular song were technically more correct.

Check into the SMSWF Workshops at smswf.com.  You will find it well worth your time.  It is important to network and meet people in the music industry.  They all started out the very same way.

The Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival (SMSWF) has four great workshops giving you several different aspects of elements that are important to you as a songwriter.  Marty Dodson and Clay Mills are willing to open up their hearts and souls to you to let you know what it takes to write a classic from their own personal experiences.  Hillbilly Culture is here to let you know from experience no matter how much talent you got, there is an education in the craft of songwriting.  Doak Turner with the Nashville Muse is hosting an opportunity for you to hear first hand what Publishers are looking for and how to approach them to get a healthy dialogue started.  Last but not least Kat Speer is teaching Photography from a behind the lens look.  Know what the camera sees and doesn’t see so that when you picture is being made by family, friends, and fans who post on Facebook and other social medias that your energy and greatness as a songwriter is being projected.

We completed 2/3 of the judging of the SMSWF 2012 Songwriters Contest this evening and will finish the rest of the judging Sunday, Aug. 5th.  All Category Winner participants will be posted no later than Aug. 10, 2012.  The talent the Preliminary judges have sifted thru is incredible.  A great big thank you to Karen E. Reynolds with the WRITERS BLOCK for the team of judges she has put together for those very special songwriters who entered their songs in the first SMSWF Songwriters Contest.  These judges really know their business in an incredible way.  Thank you Judges for giving of your time in the SMSWF.  Judges will meet again Sunday Aug. 5th to finalize the judging.  Category Contestants will be announced no later than Aug. 10th.

The SMSWF 2012 Songwriters Contest Finale Performance and Awards Night will be held Aug. 25th during the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival at the Edgewater at the Aquarium Hotel & Conference Center Saturday night 7-9 PM in the Magnolia Room.
No admission required however, seating is on a first come first serve basis.
The Edgewater is honoring the smswf discount code.
